Custom Orthotics

When we think of our feet we could compare them to the foundation of a house. If there is a problem with the foundation then other issues of structural or functional integrity arise sooner or later. There is no avoiding it.  Virtually all of us are born with perfect feet. That quickly changes for most of us and by the age of 20 years approximately 80% of us have developed some form of foot impairment. Many reasons exist for the sore and poorly functioning feet that so many of us walk on all day long.  Are any of these few examples familiar to you or someone you know:

  • Poor foot wear (old shoes that have long since seen their best days, flip flops)

  • No foot wear (walking without supportive shoes, especially on hard floors)

  • Long shifts at work on concrete or other hard surfaces, especially in hard soled safety shoes

Who can benefit from custom orthotics?

  • Children

As children develop so does their gait (walking) cycle. Those children with foot impairment develop abnormal gait cycles which can in turn lead to poor muscle development, poor posture, and poor balance. There is a reason why we see children who seem to be always tripping over their own feet. Custom orthotics for children can help address these concerns and prevent further damage from occurring.

  • Adults

Foot impairment will always lead to altered gait cycle. This will eventually lead to added wear and tear on other structures like the knee and hip. We call this the KINETIC CHAIN. With proper foot support and custom orthotics, this certain break down can be avoided. Who knows? Maybe there would be a few less hip and knee replacement surgeries.

Commonly, clients visit after problems have already become well established. Not to worry. By beginning immediately, we can assess and successfully address these concerns.

  • Elderly

As we age we enjoy the privilege of multiple health challenges. Lifelong use, and sometimes abuse, produce arthritic changes. Loss of bone calcium in both women and men makes bones more brittle. Custom foot orthotics provide enhanced shock absorption, postural correction, and enhanced balance and support.

  • Athletes

Benefits of custom orthotics specific to athletes include the protection of the feet during activity. As well, scientists have demonstrated proven increases in strength, vertical leap, and balance. As an example, golfers have demonstrated up to 10% greater driving distance while wearing custom foot orthotics versus not. Not only will your feet be thankful but you will also be maximizing performance.

  • Diabetics

Those who are struggling to cope with elevated blood glucose levels are at greater risk for other, serious related problems. Due to diabetic related vascular and neuropathic changes in the lower limbs there is greater risk of sores, blisters, and ulceration of the skin. By maintaining even weight distribution we know that the incidence of skin irritation and erosion is reduced, thereby avoiding these dangerous foot lesions. Custom orthotics for diabetics must be part of the active management of these issues.

  • Lower Limb Injury & Recovery

Custom orthotics can aid in the rehabilitation process by providing support, cushioning, and alignment correction to promote healing and prevent reinjury.
